Iceland, the land of excessive incest

 

“If I would have had this app last year, I probably wouldn’t have gone home with my cousin.”

Ah, the wise words written by a clued-up user of Iceland’s most helpful new app: ‘Bump‘; the app that avoids accidental incest.

Available in the Iceland iTunes store, the iPhone app is designed for singles to use when hitting it off with attractive members of the opposite sex before things get taken too far. The app mines the nation’s historical family database Íslendingabók  (‘The Book of Icelanders’) to quickly determine whether two people who meet, are related, avoiding any awkward incest moments of realisation later on.

You see, with a population of a mere 320,000 and very little multiculturalism, Iceland has a bit of a problem. Practically everyone is related, at some point in their family trees. The question is not “am I sleeping with a cousin?” Because the answer is probably going to be yes.

The question becomes, just how related are we? Is it safe to start a relationship or even just have casual sex?

To the rest of the world, as awkward first dates go, this would have to be right up there with always carrying a drink testing kit in case of date rape. (See: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sh4I1Yqq7EM#t=3m12s if you’re interested).

This culture is a part of every day life in Iceland, however. It is accepted as reality: yes, you’re probably somehow related to Bjork. Whether you’d f*** her, is up to you.

You’d think that with such a limited selection of similar age people to choose from in Reykjavik, Icelanders would be open to a bit of multicultural spawning. Apparently not so, according to how pure their bloodlines remain and according to this young commenter:

Going back to the quote that kicked off this piece, the key word to note there is “probably”. If they’re hot enough, or you’re drunk enough, ‘Bump’ might not make a difference in whether or not you bump your cousin tonight.
